Marijuana Use By `Seniors' Goes Up As Boomers Age - Here's Why!

First, I was going to name this article "the absurdity of basing information about pot usage by adults admitting to telephone researchers illegal activity" - but, I didn't. Indeed, I've got a little fun story about the finding on this link about the surge in pot usage by adults 55-59 (of that age group in 2008) - http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D9E1BT8O0&show_article=1 - as I was 55 and 56 in the year 2008. Therefore, I have direct insight about these figures.

Now, as to why the SURGE happened.

First, it is vital to understand the `head' and `heads' of young adults 40-45 years ago - in an era when the cops in certain states still thru folks in jail for years for a joint. Indeed, by 1970-71 (the timeframe I will describe to you very closely) things really hadn't changed that much concerning drug laws. That stated, at least we didn't have a media complacent with the government conducting a `Drug War' on its citizens.

Now, to the story. In Sept. 1970, in Grosvernor Hall a male freshman dorm, at Ohio University - our RA (resident assistant) asked 30 fresh faces on day one of college who had already smoked pot in the past (in high school) - and 3 or 4 of the 30 raised their hands. Are you surprised?

You shouldn't be. You see, the 1960's of California didn't make it to Ohio yet - and - didn't arrive until the early 70's (as you will find out). ---- So, 30 men, 18 years old - 1970 - about 10% prior use.

Then, the full force of the counter culture made it to Ohio (the Kent State incident didn't harm the advance either) - and changed the above data. How much change you ask? Well, by the end of the year --- by 1971 -- 29 out of 30 had used pot and well over half of those were potheads as opposed to alcohol drinkers. Ten percent to 96% in 9 months and a PREFERENCE for pot over alcohol. It all happened in 1971 - and now - you know - the rest of the story.
